Veterans - Flag Cases
At a military funeral, an American flag often drapes the casket of a deceased veteran to honor the individual's service to America.
After taps has played, the flag is folded into a symbolic tricornered shape. A properly proportioned flag will fold 13 times on the triangles to represent the 13 original colonies. The folded flag is emblematic of the tricornered hat worn by the Patriots of the American Revolution. When folded, no red or white stripe shows, leaving only the blue field with stars.
The folded flag is presented as a keepsake to next of kin or an appropriate family member.
This flag should never be flown or displayed in any way other than in the trifold shape in which it was presented to the next of kin. The folded flag should never be "opened" again.
Display cases are available for burial flags to protect them from wear and fading.
